Should the long hair between the paws of the Pekingese be cut?

Big Dog | January 25th, 2010

Pekingese are known for their long hair covering their little, tiny bodies. But should owners be concerned for the long hair that grows between the paws? Does this give any pain or discomfort to the Pekingese? In actuality, the hair doesn’t hurt the dog.  But the long hair may be the cause for several discomforts that will do harm. If the hair is too long, it may cause matting.

The hair can also get tangled with dirt and other forms of debris that can puncture or hurt the pads. In cold seasons, they may accumulate ice and it will clump together and add another type of discomfort. In hot times, the hair will keep the excessive heat between the paw and may cause skin rashes.  So trimming the hair is a good idea but not to the point of shaving it clean! Ask a groomer to tell you how much should be removed and how as you would want to make sure not to cause injury.
