Is the Pekingese a Chinese breed?

Yes, it is. It’s one of the most ancient dog breeds in the word: its history dates back to 2000 years. Back then, it was the privilege of the royal family to breed them, and so it was forbidden for everyone else.
During the Great China War of 1860, outsiders got in the royal palace and found 5 Pekingese, and took all 5 of them with them to Europe on their way back, one of them was even offered to Queen Victoria.
